• This is an interesting post – Let’s Stop Giving Our Crap to the Poor –  very thought provoking. It inspired lots of conversation in the comments as well.

I have mixed feelings about this, although I think I know what she’s getting at. I personally love donating stuff, and I also shop at thrift stores regularly. Practically everything my kids wear comes from a fantastic little thrift store run by a Christian group that cares for the children of incarcerated mothers with their proceeds. I love finding clothes for my kids there, and love the idea that someone else can be just as overjoyed to find our old things. I do not donate items that are broken or stained – if I wouldn’t buy it at the thrift store, I don’t donate it. Someone told me once that I should cut all the cute buttons off Little’s clothes before donating them so I could start a button collection. I was a little nonplussed at this suggestion, because cutting off the buttons would render the garment useless and it seemed just plain mean to donate something I had already gutted for parts. I did recently wonder if I should have donated Little’s outgrown underpants. They were perfectly good – just too small. Still….used underpants seem icky so I just tossed them. But in doing so, did I deny some other mother what she needed?

• This one really got to me – The Day My Son Gave Up On Me. We’ve all been there, right?

Motherhood is a choice you make everyday

to put someone else’s happiness and well being ahead of your own

to teach the hard lessons

to do the right thing

even when you’re not sure what the right thing is

and to forgive yourself

over and over again

for doing everything wrong

I actually completely agree with the donation article. My kids spent their summer working at the thrift store and sorting through donations. You wouldn’t believe the stuff people donate. Every day they had some horror story. All it does is create an added expense for the thrift store because they have to throw it away. I only donate things that are in good condition. Although, the other part of it is overpriced stuff on the thrift store racks.

I didn’t read the other article because I am basking in the glow of love from my kids right now, and I didn’t want to spoil it.

I have shown the two bearded males in our house your photos in #2. If I can persuade them that this would not lead to shaving afterwards so that they’ll go for it, I’ll send you pictures.

I’m in complete agreement about the article. If I wouldn’t buy it, I don’t donate it.

I donate everything that is in good condition as well except for underwear unless they are still packaged.

Yes!!! Mothering is hard and some days are harder than others, I am feeling that well today as I made the early morning decision to keep The Ark home from a day long meet because he is very sick! I hate that I had to make it but someone needed to, and I certainly can’t expect my 17 yr old to make it, when his coach is pressuring him to be there!

Beards are just plan gross. Food gets stuck in them and all kinds of other things. Blah.

I thought I heard that Goodwill will accept non-salable clothing, because what they can’t sell, they donate or sell to fabric recyclers. Anyone know anything about that?

In other news, I had stopped checking your blog every week due to your inactivity, so I’m excited to have 4 or 5 posts to catch up on! 🙂
