Random Monday

• As you may be aware, we are having a big election next week.

I have been getting a lot of phone calls from pollsters. A LOT.

I am not a resident of Michigan. However, this has not stopped me from answering all the ballot questions as if I were.

I find this endlessly amusing.

• The other day, I bought a box of Ritz crackers and there were only three sleeves of crackers in it.

I was so incensed, I can’t even tell you.

• I discovered Penelope Trunk’s homeschool blog. It’s quirky, honest, and different. She is a career coach, but she also started homeschooling her kids. She has a lot of interesting views on homeschooling as a result of her success in business. I became enthralled and have been chewing my way through her archives.

Here’s an interesting post called Books I Hate. I wish I were brave enough to write a post about books I hate. Here’s one called Teaching Writing: Ignore Grammar. Here is a REALLY thought-provoking article suggesting that being an activist for change in the school system is a waste of time. Ooh, here’s another called You Don’t Need To Teach Reading.

I find myself agreeing that you don’t really need to teach reading, but not so much I am going to stop doing it. I can see how well Little reads after essentially getting the shaft for the last year. It’s amazing, actually.

I am going to be coming back to grammar in a couple of weeks. Get your advice ready.

• Happy Monday, y’all! Those of you in the path of the Frankenstorm/Snowicane/PERFECT STORM OF DOOM stay safe.

Link up with your own randomness below! Don’t forget to take the button – continuity is key if we are going to take over the entire internet! (evil cackle font).

After reading your post, I checked out Penelope Trunk’s blog. I can’t quite decide yet whether I like it or not. It is honest, but some of the things she says make my eyes go open like saucers. I’m only 30 mins in, so we’ll see. 🙂

You should have taken the box of crackers back and asked where is the rest.

That is an interesting blog. I read the Books I Hate and I have to agree with her on that one. Then I started reading Lies Homeschoolers tell. I do not agree that homeschooling is for everyone. And yes I am special. Always have been. And I’m normal.

We are having a cold front. High today only 68. Thanks to the perfect storm.

Thank the stars! Your election is nearly here! Bring. It. On. Because soon, they’re gonna start ringing me!

    What are sleeves of crackers?

I’ve read some of Penelope’s blog before. Now she really is taking over the internet! I loved the “argument against raising well-rounded kids”. Well-rounded is highly over-rated.

Interestingly, we just started grammar. My kids are all over it – they rock it. Maybe because they read so much?

Here’s hoping that big mega-storm doesn’t create too much havoc and people stay safe.

That is an interesting link you posted there. I am going to have to disagree with her on the grammar thing. I don’t care if she was a professor at some high falutin’ university. 🙂 You know how I feel about grammar.

I am going to have to read more of her blog to see what I think.

Sorry about your Ritz crackers. I only buy those for special occasions after I found out that my son was eating them by the roll and the dentist said they are worse than candy for your teeth. Have a Snickers, son, but stay away from the Ritz!

I went back and read a couple more posts from that blog, specifically the big lie. In the comments she states that school does not fix neglect and lonliness. This is true. It really BUGS me that since we have moved here I have had more people tell me that my son would be less lonely if I put him in school. NO. He would just be lonely at school.

Is this an election year? Really?
Did you bring the crackers back? Or contact the company?
I will have to poke around that blog some. I am looking for more blogs to add to my reader.

I need to share with you my Pinterest pin– “If you’re lost and you don’t know where to go to why don’t you go where fashion sits…” And then there’s a picture of Vladmir Putin on a ritz cracker. (Putin on the ritz.) If that’s not good humor, well, then I don’t know what it. Looks like RM is growing!!! Woohoo!

I found Penelope Trunk a few weeks ago and I’m strangely drawn to it. That surprises me since she’s clearly a secular, Jewish, liberal woman and I’m, well…none of those. The closest thing we have in common other than homeschooling is probably the fact that I have a great respect for her cultural heritage since it birthed the Savior.

Nevertheless, I resonate with much of what she says – probably because I, too, see nothing good in the institutional school system. Her commenters disturb me quite a bit (when they bash Christians), but she’s not really responsible for them…and she’s come to Christians’ defense quite a bit. So I’ll keep reading, I think. :^)

Mrs. Trunk has a blog editor? That hardly seems fair.

  11. Melanie Says:

That’s a real shame about the Ritz crackers. Truly.

I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with the author of that blog. Just think of all the tiresome navel gazing I could indulge in if I weren’t so busy making sure my kids were proficient in fluffy subjects like reading, grammar, and math! (Sorry, Deb. I rolled my eyes about every four sentences.)

I hear you on the Ritz thing.! They give you less but charge the same amount!!! Genius marketing, I’m sure, but I certainly feel ripped off. I remember the Today showing doing a segment on how companies changed the amount of food in their packaging but kept the prices the same to trick customers into feeling satisfied.

I LOVE Penelope Trunk, no her blog is not my bible but I do agree with most of what she says. I am off to read the grammar reading thingies. “Books I Hate” sounds interesting. Until I read what Jessica said I thought that you were being ripped off as in someone stole your 4th pack! Who knew!
