Random Monday

• We are leaving here tomorrow, so today is for packing. Blech. Packing.

• I’ve really enjoyed the St. Louis area. There is SO much history here. The church across the street was built over 150 years ago and is gorgeous and in beautiful condition. There is an area of St. Charles (which is where we stayed) where all the houses have little signs in front of them telling about their history and what was happening at that time. Our house was half a block from Historic Downtown St. Charles, where there have been a ton of art fairs, street festivals and outdoor jazz concerts. The street is lined with cute little shops and paved with bricks from the 1800s. It’s an adorable little town.

• We visited the Arch on Saturday.

See all those steps? Jim wanted to run up them while I trotted along, singing the Rocky theme song.

I declined.

At the foot of the Arch is a really terrific museum about Westward Expansion, and we were fortunate enough to listen to a Park Ranger give a talk about the covered wagon. Since we are now reading The Little House in the Big Woods in the evenings, I felt quite smug about our museum experience. We saw several of the things we’ve been reading about. I was especially happy to show the kids a muzzle loader and powder horn. It was very homeschool-y.

Irrelevant Side Note: My dad had a muzzle loader. I think I saw him shoot it all of one time because it was such a pain in the butt to load.

Irrelevant Side Note the Second: Where I grew up, Hunter’s Safety Classes were mandatory in 6th grade. I learned how to shoot a rifle when I was ten.

• We did not ride the elevator up into the Arch, choosing instead to spend our money on a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi. The Mighty Mississippi! Exciting!

Jim kept offering to sing Proud Mary. I declined.

• I am looking forward to getting out of this climate. I think the Missouri river is trying to kill me dead. Ninety-nine percent humidity has ruined the marshmallows in my Lucky Charms. It’s not right, man. It’s not right.

• Happy Monday, y’all!
